Businesses which Incorporate Wellness are Winners
Certify your company for the Mayor’s Fitness Council Sponsored
"Healthy Business Partners Program"
If your company encourages fitness, healthy eating and overall healthy living, it may already be reaping benefits for your operating budget. If so, the City salutes your efforts!
Your staff may also feel that you care about them by offering healthy snacks, a discount at local fitness centers, joining a team sport, or offering financial incentive for not having a sick day in the past year.
These are some examples of the type of workplace programs and initiatives that may earn your company the designation as the Mayor’s Fitness Council’s "Healthy Business Partner."
The council wants to recognize efforts that will help Corpus Christi improve its overall health and well-being. Together we can do it.
The Healthy Business Partner Program is an initiative targeted at Corpus Christi-based organizations to improve the overall health and well-being of our community. Its purpose is to further the vision of the Mayor’s Fitness Council for all residents of Corpus Christi to live healthy through physical activity, balanced nutrition and the elimination of tobacco use.
“Since work is considered by many to be their ‘second home’ (spending a daily average of eight hours or more), the work environment. contributes to employees overall health and well-being. Businesses can encourage and cultivate a culture of wellness by offering program, policies and initiatives that make it easier for their staff to make healthy choices,” said Stacie Talbert, Assistant Director of the Parks & Recreation Department.
They can serve to be positive influences on lifestyle behaviors of their employees and subsequently their families. Lifestyle choices greatly impact the prevalence of chronic disease, illnesses and other health conditions in our community. Obesity, and consequently diabetes continue to plague our population. And cardiovascular complications related to tobacco use remain prevalent after years of campaigns to warn of its detrimental effects on our health. These trends not only negatively impact our quality of life but compromise our community’s capacity to thrive economically.
So, as a business owner you might ask, “Why would businesses be interested in participating in this program? What’s in it for my business?”
Many studies have proven that healthy employees save companies money due to reduced healthcare costs. Healthy staff may also provide employers with the ability to maintain or enhance benefits and creates favorable conditions for business growth derived from a healthy financial outcome. Other benefits include improved attendance and happier employees. No one wants to spend their hard-earned income on medical bills—money that could otherwise be used for fun, entertainment and living a more enjoyable and full life.
From a business development stand point, a community with healthy residents is a quality that companies seek when considering a good location to invest their operation. To keep our community thriving economically, it makes sense to help employees incorporate choices and habits that contribute to a healthy active lifestyle. For this to happen, every business in our community needs to be part of the change.
Applications for this program will be accepted twice a year, March 31 and September 30.
