By becoming a police officer, you accept a tremendous responsibility in the community. Therefore, the requirements and training for the job are thorough. These qualifications include, but are not limited to, the list below:

It must be at least 365 calendar days since taking the Corpus Christi Police Department Entrance Exam.

Applicants must score a minimum of 70% or higher on the written examination.

Applicants must have a valid driver's license upon filing an application and a valid Texas license before hiring and must have a driving record that reflects driving habits that are consistent with safe operation of a motor vehicle. Applicants must meet the City requirements regarding traffic violations or traffic collisions.

Must have a High School diploma or a GED. If you have a GED, you must also have completed 12 hours at an accredited college with at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, or have an honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States after at least 24 months of active duty service.

An applicant must be a U.S. Citizen. Upon hiring, an applicant must reside within 60 minutes driving time from Corpus Christi.

Vision at least 20/100 in each eye correctable to 20/40. Normal color and peripheral vision.

Possess hearing with less than a 40-decibel loss in each ear.

Must meet the age requirements:
- Must be at least twenty (20) years of age, provided however that no applicant shall be admitted to a police academy unless that applicant will be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the projected graduation date; or eighteen (18) years of age if the applicant has received an associate's degree or sixty (60) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university, or an honorable discharge from the armed services after at least two (2) years of active service.
- Must not have reached age forty-five (45) prior to being certified as eligible for a beginning position. The certification process that results in appointment to this academy could occur at any time.
The certification process is the date a conditional offer is made to the applicant. This could occur at any time within a year from the date of the entrance examination.
Has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor.
Has never been on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade B misdemeanor, or a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years from the date of court order. Has not been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years.
Has never been convicted of any family violence offense.
Has never been convicted of a felony offense.
Has not had a commission license denied by final order or revoked.
Is not currently on suspension or a voluntary surrender of license currently in effect.
Is medically, physically, and psychologically fit to perform the essential duties of a police officer.
Has not currently or recently used illegal drugs or currently or recently used intoxicating beverages excessively.
Has not used illegal drugs within the last three (3) years.
Has not used Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD), Phencyclidine (PCP), or Heroin at any time.
Has not sold any illegal drugs.
Has not been discharged from any military service (if applicable) under less than honorable conditions including, specifically;

Under other than honorable conditions;

Bad conduct;
-
Dishonorable; or
-
Any other characterization of service indicating bad character.
(If you have not served in the military, answer true.)

Must be of good moral character.

Will not make any false statements of fact; be deceptive by statement or omission in the pre-screening application, interview, background investigation, and polygraph or by any means in any part of the selection process.
ATTENTION APPLICANTS WITH PRIOR MILITARY EXPERIENCE:
Only "Honorable" discharge will qualify the applicant for the five (5) veteran points (give to applicant if they receive 70 or better on the Entrance exam). The Honorable discharge must have occurred prior to the entrance exam. "General (under honorable conditions)" allows the applicant to take the test, but is not eligible to receive veteran points. A DD-214 long form (member #4) must be received before the Entrance exam date in order to receive your veterans points.
